I’m going through the field with a young apple tree to plant. I put him onto the ground, I handle him over, I look at his newborn branches to take shape in the space around. …With no beauty, the tree does not want to make a move. That is why I stop at a certain place of the field and I ask him : “Do you like it here ?” I’m not expecting any answer, any sign of the hand holding its trunk, but I enjoy talking to the tree. As for it, it feels the edges, the horizons and looks for the right place to grow. A tree can listen to comets, planets, star clusters and swarms. It can feel storms on the sun and cicadas over it with the attention of a watchman. A tree is an alliance between the close and the perfect distance. Erri DE LUCCA Three horses |
