The Huichol people lives isolated in the high lands of the Sierra Madre, in symbiosis with nature and the sacred. It remains for ever faithfull to its traditional beliefs.

The main character, the Mara'akame or shaman is the keeper of their history and mythology and the mediator of every ritual action.

Like a third eye, the mirror, universal symbolic object,

reveals the meaning of life and the future to him.

By their rituals, the Huichols ensure that night will turn to day, that males and females of all species will live in harmony and that the magic of opposites will continue to bring abundance on Earth.

These photos were taken in April 2000. The men had gone deer-hunting, one of the three annual pilgrimages.
